Coffee Rituals and the Long Way Home

My favorite part of the week is the slow walk home from the farmers market on Saturday mornings.

It is only twenty minutes, but I take the long way on purpose, past the old brick rowhouses where someone always has their radio playing through a screen door. The canvas bag gets heavier as I go - tomatoes, a loaf of sourdough, eggs from the stand where the kids argue about who gets to make change.

By the time I get home the coffee is cold, so I warm it up and sit by the window and plan nothing in particular. Some weeks that half hour is the only time my mind goes quiet. I have started keeping a list of small things worth walking slower for, and I recommend the practice to anyone.
